Governor Gary Herbert is working to get a new kind of gasoline in Utah to help clean up the air.
In new cars, tier 3 gasoline can cut emissions by up to 80%. A new EPA rule made last month mandates the gasoline, but it could possibly skip Utah.
Because the Environmental Protection Agency allows trades and averaging, refineries could make a business decision to skip Utah for the tier 3 gasoline.
However, Wasatch Front air is so polluted – and because so much of the pollution comes from cars, the EPA says Utah’s Wasatch Front could benefit from tier 3 gasoline more than any other place in America.
The governor is also working with auto dealers to get new cars that benefit most from tier 3 gasoline. (…)
