This summer, the Governor’s Office of Energy Development (OED), in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Electricity Energy Storage Program, Sandia National Labs, Pacific Northwest National Lab, Mustang Prairie Energy, Quanta Technology and the University of Utah’s Utah Smart Energy Laboratory presented the State of Utah Energy Storage Summer Webinar Series, a first-of-its-kind webinar event.
Originally scheduled for a one-day workshop, the content was adapted into an entirely online workshop in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the six-session series, leading experts from across the country highlighted the potential for energy storage technologies in Utah beyond lithium batteries and how that storage can help push forward the power of renewable energy while providing greater grid reliability and resilience to the state’s households and businesses.
The series featured presentations from Dr. Laura Nelson-Walje at the Green Hydrogen Coalition, Michael Ducker from Mitsubishi Power Americas and Greg Huynh from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
The two-hour sessions focused on a different energy storage topic each week.

Week 2: Energy Storage Economics
Week 3: Energy Storage Applications and Case Studies
Week 4: Energy Storage Finance
Week 5: Energy Storage Policy Development and Regulatory Issues
Week 6: Energy Storage and Grid Resilience
The series reached more than 90 key energy stakeholders across the state and because of the event’s success, the DOE’s Electricity Energy Storage Program and Sandia National Laboratories have adopted the format for upcoming online energy storage workshop events.
